What is chemical peel and what is peeling treatment for?

Chemical peel is a procedure that improves the condition of the skin, stimulates the regeneration of the epidermis and remodels the corium (the fibrous skin layer under the epidermis). The combination of active peeling acids penetrates the upper to middle layers of the skin. The result is renewed, revitalized skin – the new skin is smoother, less wrinkled, and the look and feel of the skin is improved.

Dreaming of youthful and flawless skin?

Chemical peeling belongs to popular non-invasive treatments. It is suitable for all skin types, for women and men regardless of age. Chemical peeling treats certain types of acne (incl. acne scars), reduces age spots, freckles and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills, reduces fine and deeper wrinkles and stimulates the formation of hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastic fibers. It smooths wrinkles around the eyes, strengthens delicate and thin sensitive skin, deeply hydrates and improves skin nutrition.

Chemical peel – skin

What happens in the skin after a chemical peel?

  • Stimulation of growing cells in the epidermis and removal of dead cells in the stratum corneum = softer, brighter, more even and radiant skin
  • Destruction of dead cells, their detachment and subsequent regeneration of the skin
  • Irritation of the lower layer of the skin, which results in new collagen production and increased dermis volume, removing sagging skin

3 types of chemical peels by depth of action

The skin consists of 3 layers: the most superficial – epidermis, the corium (dermis) and the deepest – subcutis (subcutaneous tissue).

Superficial chemical peel

Fruit acids (AHA acids) are used most often: glycolic, citric, lactic, mandelic or malic acid. After application they dissolve the cells of the horny layer of the skin.

They have many positive effects on the skin: moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and they normalize the function of the sebaceous glands.

We recommend a superficial chemical peel when the client suffers from hyperkeratosis (excessive keratinization of the skin), acne / post-acne, oily skin, enlarged pores, fine wrinkles or superficial pigmentation.

Medium-depth chemical peel

Mostly salicylic and trichloroacetic acid in higher concentrations are used. These acids dissolve the cell layers including the papillary layer. The skin reacts to the irritation with redness and swelling. Regeneration time depends on the individual, but on average it takes a week; during this time the dead cells are completely exfoliated.

We recommend a medium-depth peel when the client notices age-related skin changes such as wrinkles, pigmentation spots or reduced skin turgor.

Deep chemical peel

A phenol peel is used most often. That is why we recommend a phenol peel only at a later age.

Indications: wrinkles and furrows (nasolabial folds, forehead wrinkles, wrinkles around the eyes and mouth), hyperpigmentation, skin losing its elasticity, scars and stretch marks, photoaging.

Recovery after the treatment is quite long: flaking completely disappears in about 4–6 weeks. After recovery the face looks 10 years younger. We recommend the treatment once every few years and it belongs only in the hands of a specialist – a doctor!

What to do before chemical peeling treatment?

The type and intensity of chemical peeling should be consulted with a professional before the treatment. We take into account not only the condition of the skin but also your expectations. The stronger the peel, the greater the results, but the healing time will also increase.

Do not use any cosmetic masks, other types of peeling or dermabrasion before chemical peeling. Also, do not wax or epilate the area before the treatment. It is also not appropriate to have other cosmetic treatments or hair dyeing immediately before the application of a chemical peel.

Frequently asked questions

How many peels do I need?

To get optimal visible results, we recommend 3–5 treatments (each treatment at a 2–4 week interval). The full benefits of the peels build up over a course of five treatments.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment time depends on the surface area to be treated. The treatment can take from 30 to 60 minutes. Much depends on the reaction of your skin to the acid.

On which areas can it be applied?

Chemical peeling can be applied to the face, neck, décolleté, back of hands or back.

How long does the effect of chemical peel last?

With chemical peeling, you get a fresh look. The skin will be regenerated, but it will not prevent aging, gravity or further formation of expression wrinkles. Therefore, we recommend repeating the chemical peel after a year.

What is the most suitable season for chemical peeling?

We recommend that you come during the period between autumn and spring. It is important to avoid direct sunlight and solarium.

Chemical peeling or microdermabrasion – what is better?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical abrasion of the skin with small crystals, while chemical peeling uses acid solutions to smooth the skin. The fundamental difference is in effectiveness. Microdermabrasion is chosen to correct superficial skin defects, such as post-acne skin, fine wrinkles, enlarged pores or age spots. Chemical peeling, which is more effective, addresses more serious skin problems such as scars and deeper wrinkles.

Contraindications

  • Diabetes treated with oral antidiabetics and insulin
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Skin tumors
  • Skin inflammation
  • Active herpes lesions
  • Keloid formation (hypertrophic scars)
  • Post-operative states of the face
  • Condition after isotretinoin therapy
  • Radiotherapy for cancer and the condition after it
  • Taking tetracyclines, antibiotics and all medications that increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight

Aftercare

  • Your skin will be slightly red and small scabs may appear. Within 5–14 days the skin begins to peel off gently.
  • Treated areas develop new skin about five to seven days after a medium-depth chemical peel.
  • Inflammation or loss of skin color may occur as a side effect of medium-depth and deep chemical peels.
  • The treatment increases skin sensitivity to UV light. Avoid deliberate sunbathing throughout the care period. After peeling has stopped, sunscreen should be used every day – new skin is more likely to be damaged by the sun.
  • Our specialist will recommend which products to apply to the treated skin – mostly products that soothe the skin and support its regeneration.
  • Follow your beautician's directions for cleansing, moisturizing and protecting your skin. Proper care after the peel can speed healing, help results last longer, prevent infection and avoid color changes caused by sun exposure.
  • Make-up will help to hide possible redness during the first days after the procedure.
