What causes red spider veins

Couperose (spider veins, telangiectasia) affects tiny blood vessels (capillaries, venules and arterioles) in the skin. They lose their elasticity and burst, small bruises form under the skin, or blood stays in them without being able to drain. Spider veins are most often found in dry skin. They show as a red face, widened and later visible veins. They can appear anywhere on the body, but most often on the face – on the nose, cheeks, around the eyes and lips. They form gradually. Couperose is characterised by dryness, sensitivity and redness caused by the widened veins. Couperose can be a forerunner of rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease which, like couperose, belongs to the group of hypersensitive skin.

Who gets couperose most often

Couperose most often occurs in people with fair skin of phototype I and II. It is more common in women with fair, thin and sensitive skin, usually after the age of 30.

What causes couperose most often?

  • hereditary vascular pathology – weak blood vessels that have lost their elasticity
  • hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, puberty, hormonal contraception)
  • high blood pressure
  • excessive stress
  • liver disease
  • poor eating habits or other skin diseases (lupus erythematosus)

Other factors that trigger or worsen couperose

  • excessive exposure of the skin to the sun
  • temperature factors (heat, cold) or a quick change from warm to cold
  • polluted environment (for example cigarette smoke)
  • intense emotions (anger, stress)
  • smoking
  • alcohol
  • pollen allergy
  • wrong skin care

In the early stages the face is only slightly red and the redness disappears again. In a more advanced stage the redness and visible veins on the face are permanent. Couperose progresses gradually and over time the face can look like a map criss-crossed with bright red veins.

Red veins on the face. What can you do?

Couperose – spider veins on the face

Soothe the skin and strengthen the skin barrier

Couperose does not hurt, but its signs often have a negative effect on the patient’s well-being. Removing the veins on the face completely is quite complicated, but irritated, reddened skin can be soothed and the skin barrier strengthened. The basis is to avoid the factors that trigger couperose; skin care designed for couperose is very important.

Most cosmetic procedures only remove the signs of couperose, but do not get rid of it for good. Whatever treatment you choose, pay special attention to caring for skin with couperose, to your diet and lifestyle.

If skin care and treatment of couperose are neglected, it can develop into a more serious disease – rosacea. To stop the vessels from widening and becoming stronger, start caring for your skin as soon as possible.

Skin care for couperose

Choosing the right products and how to apply them

It is important to choose suitable skin care products and to apply them the right way. In our salon we recommend a cosmetic line for sensitive skin that soothes the skin overall.

Apply products as gently as possible:

  • Do not wash your face with very cold or very hot water.
  • Apply products gently, without rubbing the skin.
  • Hypersensitive skin prone to couperose does not tolerate mechanical peels, peel-off face masks, or products containing alcohol and menthol.
  • In summer, day creams with a UV filter and make-up protect against the sun and cover the vessels to some extent.
  • If couperose is not too visible, it can be covered very well with make-up. A regular make-up, concealer cream or stick is enough.

Vitamin C, found for example in oranges, is very important in the treatment of spider veins. It strengthens the blood vessels and improves blood circulation. It is also an excellent antioxidant which protects the tissues from damage. Eat oranges every day on a regular basis.

Professional removal of red veins with laser

Even though you can easily hide the problem, it is better to remove it. Couperose can be partly removed with intense pulsed light, ozone therapy or laser.

BEAUTYSHAPE will help you get rid of red veins on your face with the IPL method (intense pulsed light).

Removing red veins with IPL is one of the most modern methods of removing unwanted skin conditions. It is based on the skin absorbing a beam of light, which turns into heat on contact with the blood pigment haemoglobin – this heats up and destroys the tiny veins in the treated area. The blood inside them coagulates, the dried-out vessels are naturally absorbed by the body and the veins gradually and safely disappear. New blood vessels then form naturally in the skin. The treatment is painless, only occasionally you may feel a slight burning sensation.

The treatment requires no recovery period, so you can return to your everyday activities straight away.

Results of IPL vein removal

Once the swelling, redness and irritation subside, you will notice a significant difference in the appearance of the skin after one treatment session. Multiple sessions may be required to achieve the desired results, depending on the severity of the skin condition and the size of the area being treated.
