What causes sun or age spots (Hyperpigmentation)?

Hyperpigmentation means coloring. Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of your skin. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Sun spots, liver spots, freckles and other unwanted pigmentation are often associated with skin ageing and over exposure to the sun or sunbeds.

From the age of about 40 the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure and age spots start to appear.

Causes: genetics, sunburn and sun exposure, inflammation, stress, fluctuating hormones caused by pregnancy, birth control or hormonal disorders, lack of vitamins, insulin resistance, ageing, dry, damaged or scarred skin (also due to injury or overly aggressive skin care treatment), sunbeds, some medicines (antibiotics, blood pressure medication, psychiatric drugs), impaired liver function, frequent use of hair dyes and cosmetics containing photosensitising substances.

Types of pigmentation

Superficial pigmentation – melanin accumulates in the upper layers of the skin (epidermis). This includes lentigines and ordinary freckles.

Deep pigmentation – melanin accumulates in the middle and deep layers of the dermis. Such spots can be congenital or appear after inflammation or an injury.

Generally these age spots pose no health risk, however they can be unsightly and create a patchy, less youthful appearance.

Age spots prevention

Prevention of pigmentation spots

It is recommended to limit sunbathing in direct sun and in sunbeds and to use creams and sunscreens with high UVA and UVB protection. Use quality skin care and change your diet: it should be rich in vitamins and trace elements such as vitamin C, E, zinc, beta-carotene and selenium.

Professional pigmentation removal with IPL laser

BEAUTYSHAPE will help you to get rid of these unwanted skin hyperpigmentation problems by using method IPL laser (intense pulsed light).

Laser treatment for brown spots on face

How IPL works

Freckling and age spots are successfully lightened or removed with Laser or Intense Pulse Light. IPL Skin Pigmentation treatments work by transmitting heat from the IPL light through to the pigmented skin areas: when the light meets the skin pigment (melanin), it turns into heat, which warms up the pigment and removes it from the body. IPL works best when the pigment lies in the upper skin layers.

The IPL technology is attracted to dark pigmentation, effectively drawing the discolouration to the surface of the skin, allowing the dermis to begin the healing process of correcting the blemishes over time – without damaging the surrounding tissue.

For pigmentation spots we use top IPL equipment with FDA US certificate – the only one device in Prague

At BeautyShape we use the latest generation device Trios by Viora – a technology leader in cosmetic and aesthetic fields. It has FDA US certificate. The device offers settings according to the skin phototype, so it has proven efficiency regardless of skin types and colours.

To achieve optimal results we recommend a course of 2–4 treatments (with interval of 2–3 weeks).

Because pigmentation or age spots are located on several layers of your skin, treatment needs to be repeated several times (usually 2–4 times) so the laser breaks them gradually.

Result and how long it lasts

IPL for pigmentation spots needs to be done at least 2–4 times. After the course, the pigmentation is either removed completely or significantly lightened. With both laser and chemical peel, the treatment has to be repeated. Pigmentation may not disappear forever – it can appear again later in life or due to hormones. In that case the treatment can simply be repeated.

Other methods of pigmentation removal

Pigmentation spots or liver spots can be removed in several ways. There is no single individual method of removing all pigments; in fact, in many cases, combination treatments are necessary to successfully remove pigments.

At BeautyShape we offer the IPL method described above; for lighter and milder spots, a chemical peel or mesotherapy may be suitable. The right treatment is always chosen by a pigmentation specialist individually for each client.

Is pigmentation removal painful?

Pigmentation removal with laser (pulsed light) is not a highly painful treatment. The treatment itself does not hurt – you may only feel warmth and a slight stinging in the treated area, but it is very individual. For example, the area around the eyes can be more sensitive than the forehead, and right after the treatment there may be a slight redness of the skin, which usually disappears within a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the recommended treatment intervals?

To achieve optimal results we recommend a course of 2–4 treatments (with an interval of 2–3 weeks).

How is the treatment carried out?

The glass applicator is placed in contact with skin surface and the light is pulsed through it onto the skin. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated.

How long does the treatment take?

The length of the treatment depends on the size of the treated area. It can take from 30 up to 60 minutes.

What is the best time of year for pigmentation removal?

We recommend coming between autumn and spring. It is important to avoid direct sun and sunbeds.

Why do pigmentation spots appear on the hands?

Hyperpigmentation is often caused by the aggressive effect of ultraviolet radiation on the skin. People with pale and sensitive skin are usually more prone to it. Often, after just one sunburn, the spots remain on the body forever. In most older people, pigmentation spots on the forearms and hands are also caused by hormonal changes in the body, which first show on the condition of the skin.

Contraindications

  • pregnancy
  • epilepsy
  • tattoos
  • anticoagulants (blood thinners) or medication causing sensitivity to light
  • diabetes or other hormonal disorders
  • herpes and other diseases which may be stimulated by light or heat
  • history of skin rash caused by a reaction to light
  • cardiac pacemaker, defibrillator, or other implanted electronic/metallic device
  • impaired immune system (such as HIV)
  • breast-feeding in the past 3 months
  • sunburns or exposure to sun or artificial tanning during the past 3–4 weeks prior to treatment

Aftercare

  • The treatment on the face or body does not require a long recovery, but there are a few important things to keep in mind.
  • The treatment is not performed in summer (except chemical peels) – the right time is autumn and winter, when the sun is not so intense.
  • After the treatment it is important to protect your skin with SPF 50, even in winter when the sun is milder – otherwise the spots could appear again.
  • Protecting the skin with high SPF is recommended to everyone all year round, whether or not they had the treatment.
